I live in Temple, Texas. It's not bad but it is boring. And I am too lazy to drive to Waco or to Austin. I miss Dallas. Though I haven't lived there in 18 years-old hear it is different now.
Well, on the good side, there isn't much crime cause we have more police per capita than any other city of comparable size. We also have a large supermax county jail that must be kept full at all times so citizens here are very careful to stay out of trouble. Don't speed or curse in public and you're off to a good start. We have a gigantic cadaver processing facility called Scott & White. They brand it as a hospital but it's really an intern training facility where they experiment on sick people and pretend to care about the ill's well being. If you get sick or have an emergency, you have to go to Austin for professional medical care. To support this enormous medical facility, Temple has one of the highest property tax rates in Texas. One will pay $3,600.00 a year property tax on a $110,000.00 home. On the bright side of that, if a person only has $100,000.00 and wants to live in a house, this is the only place where you can find that. For example, a $100,000.00 house in Temple would be about $350,000.00 in Austin just down the road for the same comparable home. The majority of the populous here are health care people transferred in to do a 2-3 year stint at Scott $ White. None of them are planning to stay, so that's why the gigantic explosion in apartments here lately. Selling a home here, unless you're fire-selling it, is a nightmare. There's nothing to do here at all. There are a couple of bars but please don't drink. That goes without saying. The major stores here are all downsized. It's a bare minimum kind of town designed for hospital workers. There are some back breaking line jobs because industries love the low wage they can get people to work for. But don't think you're getting one of these coveted jobs unless you are related or friends with an old Temple folk namesake. As for opportunity, unless you're degreed medical or know one of the powerful families that control the town, forget it, it's an illusion of opportunity. I'd honestly say that for every 1 regular entry level job for a non degreed person, you could find 30 in Austin. I could go on an on, but if you live here longer than five years, you already know.
It really boils down to, unless you have a reason to be here, don't.
